I Counsel You to Buy

Brother Fromke

2 Corinthians 5:10 ”For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.”

In God’s word, there are a number of judgments that are mentioned: the judgment at the cross, which judges the world, the flesh, the devil, and sins. There is the final judgment at the end before the great white throne. All the world of unbelievers will give an account at the great white throne. We who believe in Jesus Christ as our Savoir will have this judgment passed, because it cost our Lord Jesus His very life to set us free. But there is a very special judgment for all of us believers. It is called the Bema judgment. Brothers and Sisters, we need to make sure that we are prepared for this Bema judgment.

Revelation 3:17-18 “You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing’ But do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.”

Lord Jesus is that prefect lamb died for us on the cross. God has prepared a perfect salvation for us, and it was absolutely free. But in the Book of Revelation, God counsels us to buy refined gold, eye salves, and white raiment. God is a perfect God. He requires us to be perfectly righteous before Him. We are cleansed by the blood, but we are only being perfect if we are in Jesus Christ. We need to be willing to “buy”, be willing to pay the price. What are refined gold, eye salves, and white raiment?

Buy Refined Gold, Not Poor:

Experiences of Faith

1 Peter 1:7 “These have come so that your faith – of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire – may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.”

God gives us faith. As we confess and repent our sins, we enter into the beginning of salvation. But God wants us to follow Him, enriched in the experiences of faith. This measure the gift of faith is truly something wonderful. God wants to bring us through many experiences of faith, so that our faith is like the refined gold purified through fire. God has given His word and promises. Sometimes you have held on to that promise for a long time with much testing. You come through finally when there is the answer. I have known many of God’s saints through the years, who can tell about the rich experiences God has dealt with in their lives. Their faith was tested, tested and tested. I begin to realize why in the Old Testament God speaks of the beaten gold concerning the furniture in the tabernacle. The gold was layed over the acacia wood. But it was beaten gold. Many of the experiences we go through are our beaten gold. I hope you would say before we are through, Oh God! Keep on beating! It was wonderful you have been through a rich experience. Imaging you are standing before the Bema and telling someone next to you about Katrina that took place. Oh, you said, “my faith was tested, for we saw the flood all around us.” Just as you were telling this, you looked around and saw Noah behind you. Who had the richer experience, Katrina or Noah? Many of you talked about lots of Katrina experiences, but I like the Noah experience.

I have promised the Lord that I would not speak in the meetings unless He gave me a word. During one Sunday evening meeting, the church was crowded with people. I tried to honestly obey the Lord, but I did not get a word to speak. I remember that night standing before the table and saying, ‘Folks, I am sorry; but God has not given me a message tonight. I do not know what He wants me to do, but He has not given me any thing to share with you’. I bowed my head and waited. Suddenly I saw a man from this side of church go clear around and kneel down by a man on the other side of church. Everyone of the church was watching. They knew this brother and that brother had been in odds for many years. You can sense the concerns in many hearts. They went into tears and they loved one another and stood up. To my amaze, I saw people going to one another. There were problems in that church that needed to be dealt with. I never did speak that night. But God spoke. God spoke to the hearts. It was my very first experience of revival.

Buy Eye Salves, Not Blind:

Spiritual Light

When we trust in Jesus Christ, we are all getting new eye sights. I heard many wonderful testimonies through the years. When I was saved, suddenly the sky is bluer and grass is greener; even with people I didn’t love, I began to love. In our intellectual mind, we often think about a lot of things of God with our head. But one day when faith comes in, just like a mustard seed falling down in the good soil, you put your trust in the blood of Jesus that was shed for you. God immediately gives you a new heart and a pair of new eyes. Old things passed away! All things become new!

I remember the closing of a Sunday service years ago. A woman walked down the isle toward me, her face so cloudy and angry. Lord gave me a word and I said to her, “When are you going to quit fighting with God and say yes to the Lord?” The Holy Spirit did the work, and she responded, ‘right now’! She knelt down in the front pew. In a few moments, she got up and hugged me with a big smile. She did not come down loving me; she just got new eye sights from our Lord Jesus.

Someone asks “how do I buy eye salves?” The best I can understand buying eye salves is this: God gives a glimmer of light inside of me, and when I obey and walking in that light, He gives more light. It says in the Psalms, ‘in Thy light shall we see light’. We need to understand such a difference between truth and light. People can know lots of truth, but only when the Holy Spirit shines, the truth becomes the light.

In our daily life, we go through many hardships, and our faith is being tested. When we pay the price obeying the Lord in truth, we are buying eye salves. A person with eye salves is an earthen vessel containing heavenly treasure within. The man having eye salves is one who knows how to pray. The man blessed with eye salves is a disciple walking with the Lord, and is willing to suffer for the Lord by submitting himself to the Lord.

1 Corinthians 3:12-15 ‘ I f any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reword. If it is burned up, he will suffer lost; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames”.

Fifty years ago, as results of God-sent revival, we built a youth training center. One day someone slipped into the camp and burned twelve of the thirteen buildings. I still remember that day as I drove back to the camp and saw the ashes of the buildings. Then I saw myself stand before the Bema judgment seat of Christ. I do not think it was a dream. I just knew that I stood in a long line, recognizing many different people there. Some of them had in their arms full of woods, hays and stubbles. Before the piercing fiery eyes of the Lord, the woods, hays and stubbles were gone in a moment. Some had in their hands small amounts of gold, silver and precious stone. The piercing eye causes them to glitter in the light. Suddenly, these verses of I Cor. 3:12-15 became very meaningful to me. Though this happened fifty years ago, it is still very real to me this morning. There I stood in the line, I have been doing much for God, I thought. But in my arms was largely filled with wood and stubble. I wondered: Dead works being things we do to try to be saved; kind work we do by our own will for ourselves. Only good work is done by the Holy Spirit for God’s glory. One by one I saw individuals appear before the Lord Jesus. Then it came my turn. I stood there, and suddenly, Lord said to me “not yet”. You know how I was relieved. Oh Lord! Not yet! Not yet! Then He whispered back this word to me “Son! Let your building be in the lives of others for eternity, and nothing else”. All through these years, this still comes back just as often. I do not know how much was done, but I do know the heart motive is to be judged.

Buy White Raiment, Not Naked:

Fruit of Service

God has prepared for us a perfect robe of righteousness and salvation, which is given to us freely. My friend told me a story of seeing a strange lamb in a country farm. The farmer told him the story about the lamb. When that little lamb was born, his mother died. But about the same time, the farmer had another mother sheep whose little lamb died at birth. The farmer took that little living lamb and put it in the pan of the mother who had lost her lamb. She took a couple of smells. Then she said, “no, it is not mine”. The farmer remembered the dead body of her little lamb was still behind the barn. So he tied the fleece of the dead lamb over the living lamb. And that mother has been nursing that little lamb ever since. God has provided every one of us a perfect fleece. Jesus died on the cross as the perfect lamb. Through Him, God has given us the robe of salvation, the perfect fleece to wear.

Revelation 19:7-8 “Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear. For the fine linen is the righteous act of the saints”.

The garment that I am weaving in this life I will wear in eternity. I remember my first weaving job as a child: here are the woof strands, and here are the warp strands. God gives the woof and we provide the warp. Often brothers and sisters came to fellowship with me. They had burdens, but they wanted to pass the burden onto me. I always remind them that when God initiated and gave you the burden, you should obey, respond and serve our Lord yourself. I think some of you have been buying white raiment without knowing. You may have been burdened by the Holy Spirit to help someone. When burdens come from the Lord, then we give ourselves unto the service of labor of love. When we fulfill what He burdens us, the righteous act is our white garment.

The Principle of Buy

Matthew 13:44-46 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that files. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it”.

From those verses, we discovered the principle of buying. Jesus speaks of buying the pearl of great price, and buying the treasure in the field. In both of those instances, there is a willingness to trade all that you have for something much better. Thank God for everything that comes freely by His grace. But, thank God you do not need to be surprised when you stand before the Bema of the Lord Jesus, either. You don’t need to be naked, or poor, or blind, because you’ve been willing to trade every thing you have for that which is more valuable. We will go to heaven by His grace, but those who buy are those who would participate in His Kingdom. They will reign with Him, since if we suffer with Him, we shall reign with Him also.
